“Analog” is a Macintosh application program that displays the results of an analog–to–digital conversion on the Macintosh screen. The A–D conversion is performed by an easily constructed electronic device that attaches to the Mac’s serial port. This device may be easily adapted to measure nearly any analog signal such as the output of a temperature probe, voltage source, pyronometer, etc. This software and the associated electronics can be used to measure most input signals that can be conditioned to provide an output voltage of between 0 and 5 volts DC.
I wrote this program because I had originally developed the analog–to–digital converter system for use on an MSDOS machine and really wanted to use the data on my Mac. My only problem was that I didn’t have the time to devote to learning all the ins and outs of the Toolbox so I could write my own Mac application. ZBasic, from Zedcor, made it possible to develop a truly “Macintized” program in a short period of time. If you need to develop a custom Mac application with a minimal learning curve, I highly recommend ZBasic Version 5.0.
A complete description of this system may be obtained for $15.00 from the address below. The materials included consist of the following items:
• Fully commented ZBasic source code for the Macintosh application program
• Schematic diagram of the external analog–digital–converter circuitry
• Complete parts list of all components required for the system.
• System description describing the theory of operation of the system
• Notes on expanding the system for multiple A–D converters and digital inputs.
